Skill level: beginner to intermediate Best suited for: Illustrative artists, designers, and makers interested in translating drawing/surface design into ceramic work.
This seven-week course focuses on developing ceramic work through ideation, drawing, and material-driven experimentation. Students will move from conceptual thinking and studies into refined ceramic forms, with an emphasis on surface treatment as a tool for cohesion and intentional design.
The course encourages a process-oriented approach, guiding students toward the creation of a small, cohesive collection rather than isolated pieces. Surface techniques—including sgraffito, carving, stamping/texturing, underglazing, glazing, nerikomi, and slip painting or trailing—are introduced as extensions of form and concept. The class is accessible to beginners while remaining engaging for intermediate makers seeking to deepen their relationship with process and material sensitivity.
