SUSAN MADDUX

LOS ANGELES

Susan Maddux is a Los Angeles-based artist whose sculptural wall pieces blur the line between painting and form. Through a meticulous process of folding, unfolding, and reworking hand-painted canvases, she creates dimensional works that extend from the wall—ranging from small, intimate pieces to large-scale installations. Each piece is composed of multiple individual paintings, layered through repetition and experimentation to reveal a final rhythm of shape and color.
Born and raised in Hawai’i and of fourth-generation hapa-Japanese heritage, Maddux draws on personal history and cultural memory to guide her process. Her work is grounded in gesture and ritual, evoking the movements of women before her—smoothing, folding, and honoring cloth through daily acts. This repetitive motion becomes both meditative and transformative, connecting material to meaning. With a background in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute, Maddux continues to explore themes of identity, place, and reverence through her evolving sculptural practice.
