Susan Maddux, Soojung Park
Two Faced Gallery is pleased to present the dual show Chroma on display from December 13 to February 10. Chroma brings together the work of two female artists, Soojung Park and Susan Maddux, whose explorations of color transcend traditional boundaries between painting and sculpture. Both artists delve into the physical and emotive potential of their materials, using color not only as a visual element, but as a process that speaks to the depths of memory, history, and personal transformation. Their work invites the viewer into spaces of meditative stillness, where color, form, and gesture collide in subtle yet powerful ways.
Susan Maddux, a Los Angeles-based artist of hapa-Japanese heritage, merges painting and sculpture with meticulous folding and layering of acrylic-on-canvas paintings. Her pieces are a testament to the ritualistic process of material transformation. Maddux's works evolve from individual painted canvases that are folded, manipulated, and stitched together in a process of constant reworking. The result is a sculptural form that appears to rise off the wall, creating dynamic shifts in perspective and light as the viewer moves around them. These textured folds, which range from delicate to bold, are not only a formal investigation of space and texture but also a deeply personal meditation on her own cultural history. The repetitive gestures of folding and smoothing, ingrained in her work, draw upon the quiet, almost sacred rituals of women before her, connecting past and present through tactile transformation. Each piece serves as both an homage and a reflection, as Maddux reclaims material and gesture to explore themes of belonging and veneration.
In parallel, Soojung Park's practice revolves around the exploration of color and form through the layered use of ink pigments on translucent acrylic panels. Working at the intersection of painting and sculpture, Park's pieces are composed of fluid, sinuous lines that emerge and disappear within the space of each panel. Her process involves both painting and un-painting, as layers of ink are continuously applied, rubbed away, and built up again in an ongoing dialogue between the artist and the material. The resulting works capture a depth of emotional states—each line acting as a visual representation of energy, interaction, and time. The translucency of the panels enhances the ethereal quality of Park's compositions, inviting the viewer to reflect not just on the individual lines but also on the invisible spaces between them. These interstitial moments, the “third perspectives” that Park speaks of, offer a glimpse into the infinite possibilities of connection and disconnection, an endless conversation between the marks, the spaces, and the viewer's perception.
Both Maddux and Park approach their materials with a unique sensitivity, engaging with color and form as living, evolving entities. In this exhibition, their works enter into a conversation about the ritual of creation, the significance of gesture, and the dynamic relationships between physical form, color, and space. Together, they ask the viewer to reconsider the boundaries between two- and three-dimensional art, inviting a deeper reflection on the meditative power of color and the quiet language of material transformation. Chroma is a visual and emotional exploration of color's potential to transcend the flatness of the canvas and the static nature of sculpture, showing that the space between lines, folds, and forms can hold a profound, resonating energy.
